AUSTRALIA -- A man has been hospitalised after he allegedly attacked a police dog with a hammer.
At 7.30pm last night police dog Slam and his handler attended a house in Queens Road, South Guildford after a domestic disturbance was reported.
It is alleged a man at the house tried to steal a police vehicle as a he struggled with the handler.
The officer removed the keys from the ignition but the man continued to drive the car so Slam came to his handler's defence and pulled the man out of the car by his leg.
The man took a hammer from his clothing and hit Slam on the head.
He was then tasered but continued to fight with Slam as he lay on the ground.
Slam and the handler secured the man until other officers arrived.
The man was taken to hospital for treatment while Slam received no serious injuries.
A 25-year-old South Guildford man will appear in Midland Magistrate's Court today charged with assaulting a public officer while armed, cruelty to an animal and attempting to steal a motor vehicle.
