Puppy in Eufaula animal cruelty case euthanized

ALABAMA -- Police say a 5-month-old puppy involved in an aggravated animal cruelty case was euthanized as a result of the injuries it suffered.

Eufaula Police Detective Sgt. Donald Brown confirmed Wednesday a felony aggravated cruelty to animals charge remains against Latara Harris, 33, of Eufaula. He said the pit bull and Labrador mix puppy was euthanized because of the injuries it suffered.

The charge stemmed from a Eufaula animal control officer responding to an animal cruelty complaint at an apartment on July 27. The animal control officer found a 5-month-old black puppy on the front porch that was unable to move because of injuries around the right arm and left chest area, which appeared to be due to the collar having grown into the flesh of the dog.

The puppy was also found without water or shelter.

Records show Harris was released from custody after posting $5,000 bail.
