VIRGINIA -- Fredericksburg firefighters and two police officers were able to coax a kitten out from a pipe early Thursday morning, using cat food, milk and water.
A woman who heard a kitten crying from a storm drain near the Belmont apartment complex at 1 a.m. Thursday called police for help. Officer Gilworth and Officer Wagner responded to the call, say Fredericksburg Police Department officials, and spotted the kitten in the drain.
The officers then asked for a fire truck to help remove the manhole cover. Crews arrived and removed it so that Officer Gilworth could climb in the drain to rescue the kitten.
The frightened kitten, however, fled down a narrow, 150 foot horizontal pipe that runs to the other side of the road, according to police. The fire crew then removed a manhole cover on the other side of the street so Officer Gilworth could go down again. This time, he brought cat food and milk but the kitten was still too scared.
Firefighters had the idea to gently run water through the pipe to coerce the kitten get out of the pipe.
Officer Gilworth, waiting with his flashlight turned his it off, found the kitten within arm's reach moments later. He was able to get the kitten and a resident nearby took it home, say police.
