NORTH CAROLINA -- An 18-month-old boy attacked by a family dog last month remains at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
The child's condition has improved from critical to fair, a hospital spokesman said Friday.
The attack happened Aug. 24 on the 800 block of Quimby Court in the LaGrange neighborhood in west Fayetteville.
The boy's mother, Katherine Rogers, was in the house with her son when he wandered into another room and was attacked by the pit bull - mastiff mix, Cumberland County Animal Control officials said.
Rogers suffered bites on her arms as she tried to protect her son, investigators said.
The dog was euthanized at the Cumberland County Animal Control shelter.
Fayetteville police said there were no signs of child neglect and that no charges would be filed.
