Intruder breaks into shelter, puts pit bull into cage with Boxer. Pit bull does what we all know it will do - it killed the Boxer. Shelter insists pit bull is "the sweetest dog you can imagine"

TENNESSEE -- Someone broke into an East Tennessee animal shelter Thursday night, pulling a stunt that left one dog badly injured and another dead.

Sharon Cravens, shelter president at Best Friends Sanctuary in Jamestown, said a burglar put a pit bull and a boxer in the same cage to encourage a fight.

Volunteers left the shelter around 7 p.m. Thursday and returned Friday morning to find both dogs covered in blood.

Cravens said she believes someone hopped the barbed wire fence at an area that was noticeably pushed down, and then unlocked the cage of a pit bull named Sam, placing him in a pen four cages away with a boxer named Bucky.

"It's just sad to see that someone would be that evil and put two dogs to watch it for a show, you know, to put them through that," Cravens said.

When volunteers found the two dogs, the pit bull was standing in the cage, and the boxer was on the ground. Both were covered in puncture wounds and badly wounded.

Cravens said the boxer was barely breathing and had to be euthanized because his injuries were so bad.

Chrissi Colquitt, a volunteer at the shelter, said Sam is usually a playful dog with a big heart and believes he must have been provoked to engage in a fight with another dog.

"When you get him out and take him for a walk, it's like walking a puppy," Colquitt said. "He is the sweetest dog you can imagine."

Hmm, I'm thinking that this dog needs to be euthanized. It did not 'fight' the Boxer. It killed the Boxer. It did what was in its nature. There's a reason they didn't pick a Collie and put it in the cage with the Boxer.

Because of Sam's injuries, it will be several weeks before he is healthy again and ready for adoption.
The shelter is accepting donations to put in surveillance cameras in the future.

If anyone has any information about this incident, please contact the Jamestown Police Department at 931-879-5871.
