Neighbors concerned after 4 dogs attack man who's now in critical condition at the hospital

FLORIDA -- News4Jax is seeking further word from Jacksonville police this week about a vicious dog attack on the Eastside on Friday that sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say a man in his 40's was walking along Pacetti Street when the dogs escaped from a poorly-constructed chain linked fence and attacked him.

It happened near Martin Luther King Expressway and 8th Street East around 8 p.m. Friday.

Some people in the neighborhood tell News4Jax they've complained about dogs in the area before. Many said they are concerned because there's a school bus stop nearby.

The man who was attacked was taken to UF Health and was in critical condition at last check. He's recovering from numerous and severe dog bites.

The four dogs that viciously attacked him are now at Animal Care and Protective Services, where they are being evaluated.

People in the neighborhood were stunned to hear about the attack. One man said while he feels bad for the victim, he's glad it wasn't him.

"I got a bad heart," Walter Williams said. "I wouldn't have survived. Pit Bulls. Oh man. That's something else there."

One woman told News4Jax she's complained about dogs in the area before and some people expressed their reasons for being concerned.

"You got the school, the school zone right over there," Williams said. "And you have kids walking through the neighborhood."

People said they hear the sound of dogs barking often.

Right now it's unclear what will happen with the dogs responsible for the attack.

Meanwhile people are just thinking about the man who was attacked.

Police said they have identified the dogs' owner, but have not located that person. They also haven't released the exact address of the owner and it's unclear whether any charges will be filed.

"I hope he gets well and everything turns out good for him," Williams said.
