VIRGINIA -- A judge will soon decide whether a pit bull many call dangerous will be put down. This comes after what witnesses call a bloody attack in a Danville neighborhood.
They say it all happened last Monday on Winstead Drive. Neighbors tell ABC-13 the pit bull came after several of the neighbors and eventually had to be tazed by police officers.
The victim, Lisa Hairston, remains at Danville Regional Medical Center this evening, fighting complications from her injuries.
"She was screaming, 'Help, help, somebody help me," said neighbor, Lettie Kirby.
Kirby says when Hairston came home, a landscaper told her the next door neighbor's dog had gotten out. When Hairston spotted the dog, she got a leash to try to catch it.
Moments later, Kirby came outside to find Hairston trying to climb her front gate with the dog on her heels.
"The blood was just pouring out of her foot and I ran back in to the house and got a towel and wrapped her foot up for her," said Kirby.
Kirby says she got Hairston across her fence to safety where she saw a severe bite on Hairston's foot. When 2 police officers showed up, Kirby says the dog went for them, biting at their legs.
"[The police officer] tazed him," said Kirby. "That just made him madder! I'm telling you, he was really mad then!"
Eventually police contained the dog and delivered him to the "dangerous dogs" area of the Danville Humane Society.
"A dog doesn't get any more chances anymore in Virginia," said Director Paulette Dean.
Dean says a 2013 change in state law throws out a longstanding "one bite per dog" rule. Now the case will go directly to a district court judge to decide the dog's fate.
"I think the woman had a good heart, she was just trying to return the dog to a safe place. That may not have been the best choice," said Dean.
ABC-13 went to the home where neighbors say the dog was staying, but no one came to the door.
The pit bull will be held at the Humane Society until a court hearing. That is scheduled for October 19th.
