New York is doing it right: Scott M. Cusson Jr., 20, who set a dog on fire is going to prison for 1-1/2 years!

NEW YORK -- A man who set fire to a dog was sentenced Friday to 18 months in state prison.

Scott M. Cusson Jr., 20, sprayed flammable liquid – isopropyl alcohol – on the face and ear of a 9-month-old pit bull and lit the dog on fire, prosecutors said. He pleaded guilty in August to a felony animal cruelty charge.

Was he crying or laughing when he set that poor dog on fire?
"Roxy" did not receive treatment for the burns for several days, and needed to have an ear surgically removed, prosecutors said. A veterinarian contacted police.

Investigation by state troopers led to the arrest of Cusson and Roxy's owner, Edward M. Turner, 19, both of Halfmoon.

On Friday, Saratoga County Judge James A. Murphy III sentenced Cusson under "Buster's Law" for aggravated cruelty to animals.

Turner faces a misdemeanor charge of failure to provide sustenance, according to police. That case is scheduled to be heard Oct. 27 in Halfmoon Court.

Turner forfeited Roxy. The dog was adopted by a loving family, District Attorney Karen Heggen said.
