Parolee, Francisco Villegas, admits to animal cruelty, will serve 7 years for killing mother's Miniature Poodle

CALIFORNIA -- An Escondido parolee will serve seven years in prison for killing his mother's dog, the San Diego Humane Society announced Friday.

Francisco Villegas, 32, pleaded guilty last week to animal cruelty in the death of the miniature poodle named Lex.

Villegas is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 7.

Humane Society officers responded to a call earlier this year from the Escondido Police Department of a deceased animal and found the dog dead in the mother's home.

An investigation determined that the canine died of blunt force trauma, possibly from an iron.

"We'll always prosecute to the fullest extent of the law when we find intentional acts of animal cruelty have occurred," said Steve MacKinnon, chief of Humane Law Enforcement for the San Diego Humane Society. "When an animal is the victim of abuse, they are unable to speak for themselves, so it's our duty to be the voice for the voiceless in situations like this one."

Residents with animal-related concerns can call the Humane Society at (619) 243-3466 or go to its website, www.sdhumane.org.
