NORTH CAROLINA -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department rescues a turkey that was shackled at a north Charlotte apartment.
Police partnered with Carolina Waterfowl Rescue after apartment management alerted them about the bird.
Authorities rescued the turkey, now named Rocky, from an apartment complex off Farmhurst Drive.
Rocky was surrendered by his owners who told officers they planned to eat him.
Carolina Waterfowl Rescue says the bird was shackled to the apartment balcony and will need surgery to repair his wing.
"It looks like to me he was picked up by his wing. His wing was popped out of the socket at the shoulder. That's essentially like having your arm pulled off of your body and then the bone pushed out through the skin," said Jennifer Gordon, director of Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.
Carolina Waterfowl Rescue says the previous owners were issued a citation for animal cruelty. Gordon says it will take months for the turkey to recover.
