Elderly Muncie woman receives more than 60 stitches after pit bulll attacked her face

INDIANA -- An elderly Muncie woman is recovering after a vicious dog attack. The animal took off part of her jaw, requiring more than 60 stitches to her face.

The attack happened Wednesday. A family member and neighbors said Bertha Davis is 71 years old and goes by Marie.

A police report states the victim has severe Alzheimer’s disease.

“This is probably one of the more severe ones we’ve seen lately,” said Phil Peckinpaugh, Superintendent of the Muncie Animal Care and Services Department.

It’s a brutal bite and the dog named Cesar is to blame, according to authorities. The animal is in quarantine at the Muncie Animal Shelter after an attack at a home off Chippewa Lane on Wednesday.

When police got there, a woman inside told them the dog bit her mother in the face and tore off part of her jaw. An officer found the elderly victim with blood on her shirt and holding a rag to her face.

“I could see that part of her face around the right jaw was missing,” the officer said in his narrative.

The woman told police she’d gotten back from the store, and her mother bent over to pick up groceries, when the dog jumped up and bit her. The elderly woman had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Neighbors remain stunned.

“Heck yeah, heck yeah, it would worry you,” said David Kennedy, who lives nearby.

Peckinpaugh said a board typically hears cases like this and determines whether a dog should be classified as vicious, dangerous, or potentially dangerous. Often animals are re-released to their owners, but some are euthanized.

Cesar will be put down at the family’s request.

“This happens more commonly than we have those hearings. People can make the decisions on whether or not they want the animal to be returned or euthanized. Most of the time if the bite is this severe people will go ahead and make that determination,” said Peckinpaugh.

FOX59 did try getting in touch with the family at the home. A man who came to the door said they did not want to talk.
