Brooke Summers, 25, arraigned for animal cruelty after Chihuahua chokes to death

KENTUCKY -- Family members say they're shocked that a woman has been charged in a bizarre case of animal cruelty.

Brooke Summers, 25, was arrested around 11 a.m. Wednesday after police say she left a 6-month-old Chihuahua in a car for about an hour in the 700 block of S. 7th Street.

Police say the dog was left alone on a leash that was tied to a bucket inside the car with the passenger window down.

At some point, the dog jumped out the window.

The tether tied to his collar was not long enough, so the dog choked to death.

Police say Summers' neglect to provide proper care for the dog resulted in its death.

She pleaded not guilty to one count of second degree animal cruelty.
