GEORGIA -- Four dead dogs were found at a Macon home Sunday morning, possibly killed by cold weather or starvation.
According to Sonja Adams, interim director with Macon Bibb animal welfare, it happened at 2763 Barrett Ave. That's off Bloomfield Road.
She said they also found two live but emaciated dogs there -- one inside, one outside.
Some of the dogs also had bite marks.
Adams said necropsies will be performed on the dead dogs to find out how they died. Those could be performed today.
She said dog owners should take care to protect their pets during cold weather. She says they should put straw in dog houses to absorb the cold.
She said since animal welfare officials have partnered with S.A.F.E., Saving Animals from Euthanasia, it has allowed them to focus on public safety and cleaning up the community from dog fighting, hoarding and other conditions.
"(We can) focus on these types of cases and combat crime related to animals and cruelty and neglect in the community," Adams said.
Adams said the house is rented by a man who lives in Atlanta.
She said a couple of neighbors tipped them off to the dogs' condition.
