TEXAS -- A man believes a badly hurt and bleeding donkey he found dumped on the side of the road in Santa Rosa was left there to die after it was dragged by a truck.
Jason Sweet was traveling off Highway 107 and south Rabb Road in Santa Rosa on Thursday evening, and discovered the donkey covered in deep cuts along the roadway.
"It had a lot of road rash and you could see the skin was badly cut. The caliche from up the road was deeply in it already and you could see it in his skin as well," said Sweet, who reported the incident upon finding the donkey.
Sweet said the donkey appeared to be dumped and left to die after being dragged by a truck.
The donkey was later put down due to its injuries.
"It makes me feel heartbroken, you know? How could you do that to an innocent animal and just leave it there," Sweet asked.
Sergeant Armando Gonzalez with Cameron County Constable Precinct Five, who is leading the investigation, said they have not found the owner of the donkey, or those responsible for harming it.
"We did visually observe the donkey having numerous injuries - to the point that it was suffering really bad," Gonzalez said. "It was gasping for air and it was in really bad shape. Why would somebody do this? We do not know."
Officers are currently questioning two suspects.
"Right now we are still in the interview process of that, so depending on where the investigation leads us to, that's where we're at," Gonzalez said.
If found, those responsible are facing animal cruelty charges, which is felony and punishable by a $10,000 fine and up to two years in prison.
Investigators ask anyone with information to contact Constable César Diaz at (956) 797-1180 or (956) 427-8052.
