Deputies Searching For Johnson County, Ky. Animal Cruelty Suspect Amanda Adkins, 24

KENTUCKY -- The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is looking for a woman who has been charged with animal cruelty after a dead dog and another dog in poor condition were found at her home.

Gregory Lyons says his next door neighbor got two pups six months ago, but never gave them enough to eat or drink.

"I think they're really childish and don't understand the concept of taking care of anything," Lyons said.

He says he wanted to tell his neighbor, 24-year-old Amanda Adkins, she needed to either take better care or get rid of them, but she refused to acknowledge the problem.

"It'll make you cry almost," he said.

He saw one of the dogs chained up in the back yard had died.

"I said, 'We've got to bury that dog,' " he said. "We can't let it lay in the creek and rot."

Amanda Adkins, 24, of Van Lear was charged with cruelty to animals, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

Deputies said they responded to a home in the 260 block of Wolf Pen Branch in Van Lear Saturday following an animal cruelty complaint.

Deputies said they found a dog chained to cinder block with no food or water and in poor condition.

They also say it had a hunched back, which witnesses told them was from the dog being raised in a small rabbit cage.

Deputies said they also found a dead dog that apparently died from starvation.

The surviving dog was taken by Last Chance First Hope Animal Rescue  where it is receiving care.

They say the pup weighed 18 pounds, but at 6 months old, he should have weighed between 40 and 45 pounds.

"He was just left to starve to death," Crystal Music said. "I can't imagine anything more horrible or for him to watch the other dog die that night. One of the other neighbors reported he'd been kept most of his life in a rabbit cage with just a wire bottom, and it wasn't tall enough for him to stand up in, which is why he has a back problem. He also has no fat and no muscle."

Deputies said they've made several attempts to reach Adkins. Anyone with information on her whereabouts are asked to call the sheriff's office at 606-789-3411.
