TENNESSEE -- One Memphis family is extra thankful this Thanksgiving after their little boy survived a vicious pit bull attack. The dog bit his neck, crushed his skull, and caused serious injuries to his body.
At Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Angelo Garcia takes on his fears face-to-face. The East Memphis boy was bitten by a neighbor's pit bull when he was 2-years-old. His brothers and sisters all witnessed the attack.
"We had to pray to keep him safe, to keep him well around us, and to never let things go wrong," Angelo’s brother David said.
Angelo’s mom said for three months, he fought for his life in the hospital, battling infections and taking on major surgeries. Doctors began stitching his wounds, reconstructing his skull and repairing neck fractures.
"No mother desires to find their child like that. God is very great because we found him dead. My husband gave him CPR," Angelo’s mom Xochitl said.
Now at the age of six, Angelo's celebrating his birthday.
"Yes, he still hurts. He has problems with one of his legs. He has problems with his head. He is strong, but he is not a normal child. He is not 100 percent well,” Xochitl said.
This shy, yet lively little boy still has a lifetime of surgeries ahead of him. Through his victory, the family said they've gain strength and grew closer to one another.
