Reward Offered Leading to Arrest in Santa Maria Mutilated Rooster Case

CALIFORNIA -- The Santa Barbara County Animal Services has joined forces with other animal welfare advocates and organizations to offer a reward leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the death and mutilation of a rooster.

The case stemmed from the grisly discovery of a dead rooster that had been left inside a paper bag in the middle of the intersection at Alvin and Western Avenue in Santa Maria on October 26.

An off-duty Animal Control officer arrived on scene and found a black Old English rooster that had been tied up with a yellow rope, and both legs cut off.

Officials say that the rooster is a breed commonly used in illegal cockfights, but it is not clear if the incident is connected to cockfighting. A report has been filed with the Santa Maria Police Department.

A reward of $2,500 is being offered by Davey's Voice, Davey's Legacy, Animal Rescue Team, and Shadow's Fund. If the people responsible for the death of this rooster are found to be involved in illegal cockfighting, the Humane Society will add an additional $5,000 to the reward.

Anyone with any information regarding the mutilated rooster is encouraged to call the Santa Barbara County Animal Services at 805-934-6119.
