State Patrol rescues owl from I-5, tweets photo

Washington State Patrol protected an injured owl before calling for its rescue. "He still had a little spunk in him," Trooper Guy Gill said. "He wasn’t too excited about going, but it was in his best interest."
WASHINGTON -- The Washington State Patrol rescued an injured owl on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 Wednesday in Tumwater, Thurston County.

A photo tweeted by one of the agency’s public-information officers shows a patrol car and officer on a motorcycle protecting the nocturnal bird of prey before it was rescued.

Trooper Guy Gill said the owl appeared to have a broken wing after striking a vehicle, but was otherwise healthy.

Within 30 minutes, a representative from the rescue group For Heaven’s Sake in Rochester, Thurston County, was on the scene.

“He still had a little spunk in him,” Gill said. “He wasn’t too excited about going, but it was in his best interest.”

The State Patrol comes across large birds from time to time, Gill said, and calls for rescues when possible to give the animals “a second chance.”
