Animal control removes dogs left outside Jacksonville home

FLORIDA -- Animal Control has removed several dogs from a Jacksonville home after a social media outcry spurred an investigation.

It all started on Dec. 14, when a neighbor posted a photo of a dog cramped in a cage outside a home on Ribault Scenic Drive.

"It's a big animal. That's terrible to do that to that dog," said Brad Reents, who lives near the home where the dogs were found.

He posted the photo to Facebook and Craigslist and called Animal Care and Protective Services hoping someone could help the dogs.

Many viewers sent the photo to Action News Jax. When a crew visited the home Monday, they found animal control crews removing dogs from the location.

We learned neighbors had called animal services again after hearing a dog was locked in the garage of the home.

We spoke with the owner of the dogs, who said they were being cared for by family until he moves into a new home.

"My dog was not in a small cage when I left him there," he told Action News Jax reporter Russell Colburn.

Colburn asked who put the dog in the small cage.

"Man, I'm not going through this with you, the news. Man whatever bye," said the owner.

Animal care workers did not find a dog in the garage when they arrived, but did take five dogs who were not chained from the property.

Some looked emaciated, while others were covered in bugs.

Officials said charges against the owner are possible.
