SOUTH CAROLINA -- A woman was arrested Thursday after deputies discovered eight adult dogs and two litters of puppies all in bad condition while serving a search warrant in search of stolen dog.
Danielle Leigh Balasty, 32, of 9711 Hwy. 178 S., has been charged with ill treatment of animals (aka animal cruelty), resisting arrest, simple possession of marijuana and larceny of dogs in connection with the incident.
According to a report from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to Balasty’s residence to serve a search warrant as part of an investigation into a stolen Doberman. Deputies knocked on the door, but did not get an answer. Deputies then entered the residence using the key on a key ring hanging in the lock of the front door. Balasty was located in a bathroom, but refused to exit initially, shouting at deputies to “get the (expletive) out” of her house.
According to the report, deputies located two litters of puppies in metal cages lying in feces. The puppies appeared to be under six weeks old and had sores and bare spots on their bodies. The adult dogs being kept outside did not have basic nourishment, including water, but deputies did find animal carcasses, leading deputies to believe the dogs had consumed raw and possibly spoiled meat. All of the adult dogs had scarring on them.
According to the report, Balasty exited the bathroom wearing only a shirt and underwear and fought with officers as they attempted to place her under arrest. Balasty was eventually handcuffed and taken outside where she continued to swear at deputies as well as kick at them when they walked by. Deputies located the stolen dog at the residence and returned it to its owner.
Court records indicate Balasty has a history of both theft-related and assault-related offenses, including pending charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime stemming from a 2013 incident in which she allegedly stabbed another woman at the Cultured Cowboy.
