Reuben Smoker, charged with animal cruelty, after leaving his horse on the side of the road with a broken leg

PENNSYLVANIA -- A veterinarian was needed to euthanize a horse that broke its leg while pulling a buggy in the 400 block of Stracks Dam Road in Jackson Township Friday afternoon, after its owner tried to transport the injured equine in a skid loader.

State police at Lickdale said Reuben L. Smoker of Myerstown abandoned the injured animal for 90 minutes before returning about 4:30 p.m. with the skid loader.

He was charged with cruelty to animals, police said.
