RSPCA inundated by people wanting to adopt little dog found abandoned on Christmas Eve

UNITED KINGDOM -- RSPCA inundated by people wanting to adopt dog abandoned in South Devon on Christmas Eve

The RSPCA say they have been inundated by people wanting to adopt Pudding, the dog abandoned on a South Devon street on Christmas Eve.

The shih tzu mix was discovered by RSPCA staff in such a disgusting state that they were initially unable to identify his breed.

His fur was so matted he couldn't see. He was left tied up in the rain and his coat was so matted he could not open his eyes.

Pudding is now being cared for in an animal centre after he was found by the RSPCA - who gave him a hair cut.

RSPCA inspector Sarah Morris said: "The state Pudding was in when I first saw him was so sad, but it also made me so angry that someone had neglected him so much already, just to dump him on Christmas Eve.

"He was soaking wet. We had torrential rain during the night and he had just been left out in it, tied up. I felt so sorry for this poor little chap.

"Pudding's coat was so matted around his legs and face that he couldn't see out of his right eye. His nails were overgrown and he was covered in fleas. He must have been terrified, hungry and so uncomfortable, just left out in the dark, wind and rain.

"I took him straight to a vet who gave him a body score of three-and-a-half out of 10, so he was very thin."

Pudding's plight has tugged at the heartstrings of many dog lovers, who contacted the RSPCA over Christmas to enquire about adopting him.

But the dog - thought to be six or seven-years-old - is not yet ready to leave his temporary home at the Little Valley Animal Centre, near Exeter.

A statement on the charity's Facebook site said: "We have been overwhelmed by the number of people wanting to adopt Pudding.

"He is not available at the moment as the inspector is still gathering evidence with regard to his abandonment and ill treatment.

"Rest assured he is being looked after fabulously at the moment and at some point he will be available for rehoming. Thanks for your support and kindness."

The RSPCA is continuing to appeal for information on how the dog came to be dumped in Plymouth.

Inspector Sarah Morris arrived after Pudding was spotted at 6.30am on December 24 by a member of the public on the way to work.

They took Pudding in out of the rain and called the RSPCA.

"It brought a tear to my eye when I was taking him to the animal centre. He must have been terrified, hungry and so uncomfortable, just left out in the dark, wind and rain," said Ms Morris.

"At least he's going to have a much happier Christmas now he's in the RSPCA's care."

Anyone with information about who dumped Pudding can leave a message for Ms Morris by calling 0300 123 8018.
