MASSACHUSETTS -- A 42-year-old city man is facing an animal cruelty charge after he allegedly refused veterinary care for his 2-month-old puppy that was living in a feces-filled apartment with a severe wound on its head.

In Lowell District Court on Tuesday, Raymond Manness, 42, of 3 River Place, Apt. 1601, Lowell, was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty to one count of animal cruelty. He is scheduled for a pretrial conference on March 8.

Lowell police state in court document that around 7 p.m. on Nov. 2, Manness' sister contacted the police to do a wellness check on her brother and the puppy, "Murphy." Manness' neighbor had contacted the sister because Murphy had a large gash on her head that was untreated. Manness had been drinking for much of the day, according to reports.

The sister told police she fought with her brother earlier in the day about Murphy's gash, which was 4 1/2- inches wide and so deep you can see inside the dog's head, according to police. The sister told Manness to take the dog to the vet, but he did not.

When police arrived, they found the apartment in disarray with "feces all over the apartment, including in the dog's bed," police said. Manness was asked why he didn't take the dog out, he responded he didn't want her cut to get infected.

When he was asked how the dog got hurt, he responded that she ran into the wall.

Manness agreed to let his sister take the dog to the vet.

Two days later, the sister told police the dog was still in the hospital. The wound had to be drained three times before it could be stitched up.
