Michigan: Is this the dumbest man in Michigan? After getting sweetheart deal from the DA, Christopher Scott doesn't bother showing up at court - where he most likely would've been given probation. Now $5,000 bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.

MICHIGAN -- A bench warrant has been issued for a Lapeer County man accused of shooting his dog in the head with a crossbow arrow last year. The man failed to show up for his sentencing Thursday.

The bench warrant with a $5,000 cash bond was issued for Christopher Scott, his attorney, Matthew Funke, confirmed.

"I wish I could tell you more," Funke said, adding that he could not disclose whether he had contact with Scott on Thursday or  if Scott planned to turn himself in.

Lapeer County Prosecutor Tim Turkelson had not heard that Scott failed to appear. He said in an e-mail, "We will have law enforcement attempt to pick him up on the bench warrant as soon as possible."

Scott of Goodland Township was to be sentenced in Lapeer County District Court. He faced up to a year in jail after pleading to a reduced animal-cruelty charge last month. Scott also was to pay $1,600 in fees to cover half of the costs that authorities spent caring for the dog, named Gemma, after it was wounded. He originally was charged with felony animal cruelty which would have put him in jail for up to FOUR YEARS.

Scott said he tried to euthanize the 65-pound mastiff-Labrador mix when he shot her in the head in March. He said Gemma, about 2, mauled his 14-year-old, 20-pound pug.

Scott was accused of taking Gemma to a field from his home, letting the dog out 10-15 yards and shooting her. Scott thought the dog was dead, but when he went to collect the body, she was gone.

Gemma was found two days later by an Oakland County man and had the arrow sticking out of her head.

After recovering with Lapeer County Animal Control, Gemma went to the Devoted Barn, an animal rescue and rehabilitation facility in Newport in Monroe County. The facility announced that Gemma was available for adoption.
