Minnesota: Nearly 50 dogs rescued from Carver County puppy mill barn; no charges being filed

MINNESOTA -- The Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley is readying nearly 50 dogs for adoption after they were rescued from a farm in early January.

The dogs - 23 adults and 24 puppies - were living in a hog barn in rural Carver County. Their owner had been notified months earlier that he was being evicted from the property but refused to remove his dogs and find alternate housing for them.

The dogs — mostly hounds, setters, and pointers — were left with nowhere to go and no one to care for them. Humane agents attempted to work with the property owner to find a solution, but an extended relocation deadline expired and a team from AHS rescued the dogs from the property. The animals were cared for at AHS in Golden Valley for 10 days while the legal process continued to unfold. They were legally released to AHS on January 15.

The animal control officer in the video said they're not releasing the name of the owner because they have no plans to charge him, even though he was running a puppy mill. Even though he "refused to remove the dogs and find alternate housing for them". He gets to dump his problem onto the shelter, get settled elsewhere and start all over again.

The medical and behavioral needs of each dog are being assessed. Most of the adult dogs will become available for adoption in the next several days, while puppies will be in foster care with their mothers until they are old enough for adoption.

AHS officials say sadly, cases like this are not rare, Humane agents have responded to three cases and rescued 167 animals from unhealthy living situations already this winter.
