Pit bull bought on Craigslist waits five months before trying to kill everyone, including seven-year-old boy

WISCONSIN -- Four people were bitten, including a 7-year-old boy, by a pit bull in the village of Big Bend at approximately 6:20 p.m. Jan. 2 at a residence near Rose Avenue and Jackson Parkway.

According to Village of Big Bend Police Chief Don Gaglione, the dog is a 5-year-old male pit bull that was purchased from Craigslist about five months ago.

Gaglione said the owner told an officer on scene that he's had no problems with the dog in the last five months and the dog had been around children previously with no incidents. He said the owner plans to have the dog put down.

The boy and another victim were visiting the owner of the pit bull and the owner's mother when the attack occurred, Gaglione said. He said at one point during the visit after "a commotion of some sort," the dog started barking and growling.

Gaglione said the dog bit the foot of the owner's mother when she put it out to stop the dog.

The man and boy who were visiting retreated to a bathroom area where the dog followed and bit them. The owner got control of the dog but also sustained a bite to the arm.

The owner was treated on scene, and the three other victims were treated at a hospital. The mother received stitches in her foot, the visiting adult received stitches in their hand, and the child needed stitches in his arm. The boy also had a small cut to the bridge of his nose, which Gaglione said he believes was caused by the dog biting at his face.

The dog has been quarantined at the Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County as is normal procedure, Gaglione said. The investigation remains ongoing.
