"Horrific would be the only words I can say," Gordon Kuenemann, Alice's son said.
Photos taken by her family showed the extent of injuries from a hospital room.
Fragile skin on her 110 pound frame was torn open on her arms, face and neck.
"Just missed the jugular," Gordon said about one of the dog's bites on his mother's neck. "I was just so shocked to see that much pain on a 92-year-old lady."
Gordon said it was a neighbor's 80 to 90 pound Pit Bull who broke loose from a restraint and charged.
Alice was nearly mauled to death outside her home of 57 years along Shadyview Drive in Balcones Heights.
"He came out and heard my mother screaming," Gordon said about the man who helped her.
It was a neighbor who rushed in and saved her life.
He's also wanted to recognize Joey Vince's heroics in a special way.
"I just think of the CASH OF KINDNESS program," Gordon told Fox San Antonio's Ryan Wolf. "I love the thought of it. I love the idea of it. And it's a way to say publically that you can stick your neck out it saved her life."
Joey's surprise nomination unfolded outside a relative's home a few blocks away from where the dog attack happened.
"I called Ryan and told him about the amazing story, and what you did, and what kind of hero you are," he told Joey. "I said people need to know there are still people like you. There are good people still in town."
Joey immediately recalled some of the details from that tragic day.
"That dog was so enthralled," he said. "He didn't lift his head until I stood over the dog and yelled, 'No!' Then I looked up, grabbed the back of his neck, sat on the back of his neck and pinned it down. Then some neighbors came out, they called Balcones police."
Gordon reminded him that he was a true hero.
"You saved my mother's life," he said.
Joey was thankful he was at the right place at the right time.
"I think one more minute and she might not be around," he said.
Wolf shared how his nomination came with a reward.
"Fox San Antonio has a program called CASH FOR KINDNESS, and we reward people in this community who are making difference," he told him. "And, I don't think there's a person in this area who would disagree with me when I say, you my friend, are real life hero."\
"Well, thank you sir," Joey said in response.
Wolf handed Joey his cash prize on behalf of Fox San Antonio.
"$400!" he said with a smile. "Thank you sir. "I'm just glad I was there at the right time because she was in trouble. I do it for anybody. That's just the way I am."
Joey proves you don't need a cape, just a kind heart to change someone's life.
"You're a great neighbor," Gordon said while shaking Joey's hand. "I've known you for a long time. Thanks for saving my mom."
Alice has recovered from much of her injuries.
Police called the attack "an unfortunate accident" and did not cite the dog's owner for getting loose.
However a citation was issued for not having the animal properly vaccinated, according to a Balcones Heights police spokesman.
The dog was inadvertently killed when police tried restraining it after the attack.
