ALABAMA -- Samson Police Officer Darrell Smith says the unnamed male golden retriever was stuffed in a tiny cage on the front porch of a home.
Officer Smith says the animal's ribs were showing indicating he had not been fed properly.
Also, a dead dog in similar physical condition was found on the back porch.
Officer Smith says the dog's name should be "lucky". Last month, the young golden retriever was near death in a cage. Its owner, Jason Carter, faces a misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.
Police prompted the investigation after receiving calls from concerned citizens about the animal's health. But at the Samson shelter..., he's eating ..., gaining weight and has plenty of energy.
Carter is being prosecuted in Samson Municipal Court. If convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of one year in county jail.
