Pennsylvania: Cat killer Scott Deater, 24, deserves state prison, judge says

PENNSYLVANIA -- A former Freemansburg man who beat to death his girlfriend's pet cat will remain in state prison, a Northampton County judge ruled Friday in rejecting a request for a reduced sentence.

Scott A. Deater is a manipulative man who wasn't truthful when he claimed he couldn't remember brutally killing the 1-year-old feline last summer, Senior Judge Leonard Zito said.

"The sentence was appropriate," Zito said of the 16-month to 32-month prison term that Deater is serving.

Deater received it last month after previously pleading guilty to animal cruelty and a separate criminal mischief case. But defense attorney Christopher Spadoni asked Zito to reconsider, calling the punishment too severe.

"We find that to be somewhat punitive and harsh under the circumstances," Spadoni said.

Mr. Spadoni, I hope that your daughter/sister/loved one someday dates someone like this monster, Scott Deater, so you can run around and tell everyone how he's misunderstood.

Early July 7, Freemansburg officers were called to Deater's former home on Ramblewood Lane to find that he had killed the cat belonging to his then-girlfriend, Adriana Marques.

The cat's carcass was lying on the living room floor, and Deater was packing his clothes to leave, police said. He admitted the abuse to officers, saying the cat had scratched him, police said.

Spadoni has said his client "blacked out" during the cat's beating, in which he threw it against walls in the home and dunked it in the bathtub because it didn't like water.

Assistant District Attorney Richard Pepper insisted Friday that Deater knew exactly what he was doing that morning, as evidenced by a profane text message he sent Marques afterward informing her that he had injured her pet.

"He was very clearly thinking, 'How can I possibly torment and torture this animal?' And that's what he did," Pepper told Zito.

Deater's criminal mischief case stemmed from an April 30 incident at the apartment. In it, police charged Deater had roughed up a roommate, smashing her cellphone and throwing her belongings outside — where he sprayed them with shaving cream.

Under Zito's sentence, Deater will be on probation for three years once he completes his prison time.
