Kimberly Eden, 47, pleaded no contest in Marion Municipal Court on Tuesday and received a 30-day jail sentence, with 20 days suspended, and a $400 fine with $250 suspended. As part of her post-release conditions, she will not be allowed to own pets for the next two years.
The Sheriff's Office did not specify which day the incident occurred, but said the investigation began on March 4 and involved interviews with Dog Warden Scott Mills, Eden, one of her relatives who owned the dog and a friend of that relative.
Eden said she had been taking care of the dog for the past two months after her relative moved out, and had asked the relative to take the dog back. Part of her frustration, she said, was that the dog was not fully house trained and when she came home on the day in question the dog and another one had destroyed several pizza boxes.
When she tried to pull the dog out from under a table to punish it, the dog tried to bite her twice and that was when she stabbed it, according to Eden's statement. The Sheriff's Office report did not say where the dog was stabbed, but that the non-life-threatening wound later became infected. Eden then kicked both dogs out of her residence, and they were found near a local restaurant as a result.
The relative who owned the injured dog said Eden stabbed it after it tried to eat pizza that was sitting on a counter.
The deputy cited Eden for animal cruelty due to the nature of the stabbing and because she did not provide care to the dog afterward.
