California: Chihuahua’s jaw nearly torn off in attack by neighbor’s pit bulls

CALIFORNIA -- Two pit bulls nearly tore the jaw off a Chihuahua right in its front yard and the owner of the dogs will not face any punishment.

The Chihuahua, named Pico is just starting to get his pep back in his step after being brutally attacked last week.

"We hear this God awful screaming,” said the dog's owner Debhra Brzeznski. “Everything was hanging. It had just sheared it off the bone."

That was on Friday as the 9-lbs. dog was running around in his fenced in front yard. The family was inside, but another neighbor witnessed the attack and said the pit bulls were out of control.

“The dogs knocked the owner off his feet four or five times," said Brzeznski. "He had no control over those dogs whatsoever.”

The owner of the pit bulls lives across the street and came around the corner of the front yard.  He claims the Chihuahua provoke his dogs by nipping at them. But Brzezniski said she doesn't believe it.

“There’s no way for [Pico] to stick his head out even if he’s up on the fence. His head is not going to fit through the fence," she said.

Pico, 15, underwent emergency surgery, and he’s now using a feeding tube and must be administered medications every four hours for the next three weeks.

“They had to wire his jaws shut,” explained Brzeznski. “They picked up all this (skin) that was hanging and tried to reattach it to his jaw," Brzezniski said.

As we were leaving the quaint house on Parkside Street in downtown Lakeside, the owner of the pit bulls happened to show up, but drove right by refusing to talk with FOX5.

Animal control officials said the dogs' owner cannot be held responsible for the attack, because  they cannot determine who is at fault. They said there is no evidence that the pit bulls have involved in any other attacks.
