Nebraska: Investigation launched after dog died of dehydration, starvation, Lincoln police say

NEBRASKA -- Lincoln Animal Control is investigating a case of alleged animal cruelty after someone left a black Labrador puppy to die.

Steve Beal, the city animal control manager, said they found the deceased dog locked in a tan pet crate near 37th and South streets. He said a concerned citizen called in a tip on March 1.

They said the dog had been unattended for so long that it eventually died of dehydration and starvation.

"We never like to anything like this, where a dog may have been treated cruelly or starved," said Beal, "We want people to know they have options. They can take their animal to Capital Humane Society or any of our local rescue groups, rather than letting it die."

Beal said they ordered a necropsy of the animal. That will help determine potential criminal charges in its death, if they find a person responsible.

Lincoln police posted pictures of the abandoned crate on social media, hoping to generate leads. They said the kennel has a Mizzou emblem on the front and are looking for its owner.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Lincoln Crimestoppers at (402) 475-3600 or animal control at (402) 441-7900.
