Stacey Fay, a resident of South D Street, said she got a little closer when all of a sudden a man emerged. It was her neighbor, Tim Bigelow, 50, and he had Fay’s long-haired gray cat, Aran, by the scruff of the neck, she said.
“(Aran) was breathing really strange. She’s a tiny cat. And I said, ‘What’s going on? What are you doing?’?” Fay recalled. “And he just said, ‘I’m (expletive) tired of this cat!’ and said she killed his chickens and his chicks.”
Fay said she pleaded with Bigelow to let 9-year-old Aran go, but Bigelow would not, and walked away. Moments later, Bigelow allegedly drove off with Aran toward Dorris Ranch.
When he returned, he no longer had the cat, telling Fay “I killed her and threw her out,” she alleged.
Fay called police at 2:45 p.m. She said officers arrived an hour later and confronted Bigelow.
Springfield Sgt. Rich Charboneau said Bigelow admitted killing the animal by shooting it at Dorris Ranch, a historic site run by the Willamalane Park and Recreation District. But Bigelow refused to tell officers where he disposed of the cat’s remains, Charboneau said.
Bigelow was arrested on charges of first-degree aggravated animal abuse, first-degree theft and second-degree criminal trespass.
The long-haired gray cat has not been found.
Bigelow has a lengthy criminal history. His last arrest was in January on a charge of second-degree animal neglect. He was cited in October 2014 for unlawfully taking a raccoon without a permit and was convicted in December of that year.
