TENNESSEE -- The owner of a dog that was abandoned on the side of Ussery Rd. with severe health problems has come forward, according to Animal Control Director Jeanette Farrell.
The dog was found by a good Samaritan who alerted Montgomery County Animal Care and Control.
Ulysses, who was named by Sango Veterinary Hospital, had a high fever and was placed on IV fluids. He is blind and his eyes will need to be removed due to severe infection. He also has a serious case of demodectic mange.
Farrell said the owner voluntarily came forward Thursday to claim the dog.
The case has been assigned to an Animal Control officer, who will issue a warrant for the owner’s arrest on an aggravated animal cruelty charge.
Ulysses is in protective custody, meaning the owner has not been allowed to see him, according to Farrell.
Medical records showed that the dog had not received any kind of veterinary care since December of 2013. Farrell said the owner had declined the vet’s recommendations for further treatment the last time the dog had been seen.
The owner told Animal Control the dog was lost. He said he had not called Animal Control to file a missing animal report.
Ulysses will remain in custody while he receives the medical care he needs.
Animal Control cannot publicly identify the owner until an arrest warrant has been filed.
Update: He has been identified as Clifford Moreland and he has been charged with animal cruelty.
A Gofundme account has been set up by several caring and concerned citizens called “Hope for Ulysses”. All funds will go solely to the treatment of Ulysses and not to Animal Control.
