Canada: Pit bull grabs boy by throat in Scarborough, police shoot animal dead

CANADA -- An eight-year-old boy has serious but not life-threatening injuries after he was attacked by a pit bull in Scarborough Wednesday evening.

Toronto police and paramedics were called to Conlins and Good roads, near Morningside Ave. and Hwy. 401, around 5:56 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a dog attack.

According to police, an 8-year-old boy was outside with his father when a pit bull began attacking the child, seizing him by the throat and refusing to let go. Officers arrived and "engaged" the dog, which eventually released the child.

Paramedics took the boy to a local hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries to his face, buttocks and foot.

Police shot the dog dead following the attack.

Earlier, a Toronto police Twitter account said the dog bit an officer during the struggle to get it off the child, but the 43 Division staff sergeant later said the officer had simply fallen after the dog lunged at him.

Police are trying to identify the dog's owner, who they believe lives in the area.
