Texas: Animals seized from Santa Fe feed store

TEXAS -- Houston Humane Society officials on Thursday morning were assisting Bayou Animal Services of Galveston County with the seizure of a large number of animals from the Santa Fe Feed and Pet Supply store, after a warrant was served on the property.

Officials from the Galveston Police Department, the Galveston County Sheriff's Office, the Santa Fe Police Department and the city of Webster were all on the scene.

Houston Humane Society officials said they would be taking possession of puppies, kittens, snakes, small pigs, guinea pigs, exotic birds, mice, peacocks, chickens, roosters, a donkey, a goat and a sheep.

The animals will be held at the society's Almeda Road location until a seizure hearing is held to determine custody.

It’s believed that Bayou Animal Services received a complaint about conditions at the store which led to an investigation.

Monica Schmidt of the Houston Humane Society told the Houston Chronicle that while they are prepared to take in the large number of animals, they may soon be making an appeal for supply donations.

Just after 3 p.m. Schmidt said her team had cataloged 214 animals. Two deceased animals were found at the scene.

They will be assessing the health of the animals when they arrive at their facility.

Melvin Trover with Bayou Animal Services wasn't able to respond to a call for comment on Thursday afternoon.
