NORTH CAROLINA -- A woman was attacked by a family member’s dog in her Pembroke apartment Wednesday morning, and Robeson County officials say the victim had to be airlifted to Duke University Hospital because of the severity of her injuries.
Robeson County Department of Public Health Director Bill Smith says the victim’s sister owns four pit bulls, one of which was the attacker Wednesday morning. Smith says the victim’s injuries are very serious and he’s “not sure she will be able to keep her arms.”
Smith adds that the four dogs were taken to the veterinarian’s office in February for rabies shot, and at that time, the vet noted that the dogs were “aggressive,” even though there were no recorded attacks for any of the dogs.
The dog that attacked the woman was an offspring of one of the other three family dogs. It was approximately 1-year-old and weighed roughly 80 pounds.
The owner surrendered the dog, named Rowdy, which was taken to the Robeson County Animal Shelter and euthanized following the viscous attack. Rowdy’s brain was sent for rabies testing, confirms Smith, out of precaution and because of the nature of the injuries. The results of that test have not yet been returned.
No charges have been filed against the dog owners at the time of this posting.
