PENNSYLVANIA -- Three horses are recovering after the SPCA said they nearly died from malnutrition and neglect.
A Luzerne County woman was found guilty this week of animal cruelty in connection with the case.
Todd Hevner, with the SPCA of Luzerne County, said the organization received a tip last August, which prompted this investigation at a farm in Sweet Valley.
He said the animals were emaciated and suffered from skin infections.
One photo shows a bale of hay out of reach from the horses on the other side of the fence.
My guess is that someone dropped it off because they felt so sorry for the horses and maybe were spooked before getting a chance to throw it over the fence.
Hevner said the SPCA tried to work with the owner of the horses, Jodi Bendick-Faulkner (aka Jodi Faulkner), but she failed to have the animals examined by a veterinarian.
The SPCA was able to seize all three horses from the property a few months ago, and they are now recovering at an undisclosed location.
Hevner said the larger horses gained "hundreds of pounds" while in the SPCA's care.
Bendick-Faulkner's Facebook page showed photos of her from 2009 racing horses. It is unknown why she went from racing horses and caring for them properly to nearly starving them to death.
Bendick-Faulkner was found guilty this week of animal cruelty. Hevner said sometimes people underestimate how to properly care for horses.
The SPCA of Luzerne County relies on the community to report suspected animal abuse. Hevner told Eyewitness News it's important to provide specific details when you call.
