CANADA -- Two women facing animal cruelty charges stemming from the seizure of 49 cats from a Beamsville home have pleaded guilty.
On Thursday, Stella Dancer and granddaughter Heather Robertson each pleaded guilty to four counts of cruelty to animal charges laid against them under the Ontario SPCA Act.
THEY ABUSED 49 CATS AND ONLY HAD TO PLEAD GUILTY TO ABUSING FOUR... TYPICAL LENIENT PLEA AGREEMENTS FOR ANIMAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT.
In St. Catharines provincial offences court, a justice of the peace registered eight convictions and sentenced Dancer, 75, and Robertson, 32, each to $2,500 restitution to the Lincoln County Humane Society; a 10-year ban from animal ownership, excluding one cat which is permitted to be owned; three years probation; and $40 in fines.
In February 2015, the LCHS executed a warrant on a Beamsville address and removed 49 cats found to be in distress.
In total, 63 cats were either seized or relinquished by the owners since February 2015, the LCHS said in a news release.
“It is important that pet owners provide proper care for their pets at all times.” LCHS executive director Kevin Strooband said in the release. “If an owner is facing challenges relating to the care of their pet they are encouraged to contact their local humane society or SPCA.”
