Tracy Cowley (DOB 3/07/1994), 22, has been charged with cruelty to animals after police stopped him around 4 p.m. Thursday near Ridgeway and Knight Arnold.
Police said one of his passengers wasn't wearing a seat belt, but they ended up detaining Cowley for marijuana possession.
While he was in the back of the squad car, he alerted officers to the fact that the puppy, named Teetee, was in his trunk.
The high temperature Thursday was 72 degrees, but it's much warmer inside a trunk.
Officers said the puppy appeared “extremely overheated,” was “panting profusely, and weak.”
When police asked Cowley why the puppy was in the trunk, they said he told them, “I didn't want it crawling over my homeboys.”
The puppy was taken to the Memphis Animal Shelter, where it remained Friday.
“It’s frustrating to me to see animals not treated like family because that’s how they see you,” said Katie Pemberton, with the Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County.
Pemberton's group isn't affiliated with the shelter that's caring for Teetee, but she said she sees cases of animal cruelty all the time.
“That's (the trunk is) not a ventilated area of the car. The air conditioner doesn’t get back there,” said Pemberton.
Teetee will remain at the Memphis Animal Shelter until Cowley's court case concludes.
Cowley is out of jail on a $100 bond.
