Rebecca Garcia says the dog’s owner fled after the attack in southwest Fresno, telling her mother, Victoria Young, 67, that he could not stay because he feared his dog would be put down.
Garcia is asking for help identifying the man, whom she said is criminally negligent, and “a coward that left my mother on the street, caring more for his dog than for her well-being.”
Lt. Joe Gomez said police investigated the incident, which took place on the 1300 block of East Annadale Avenue on Monday morning. After the attack, Young saw the man get into a vehicle and leave, but police do not have information about the type of vehicle the man was driving.
Garcia said her mother was walking from her apartment to a senior center when the dog attacked her from behind, biting her in the leg and knocking her to the ground. Garcia said people at the senior center witnessed the incident.
The dog owner pulled the animal off and said he was sorry but that he could not stay.
A good Samaritan called an ambulance and stayed with Young until paramedics arrived to take her to Community Regional Medical Center. Doctors put metal plates and stents in both of her arms. She probably will need months of physical therapy in her rehabilitation.
The incident is especially traumatic because “she witnessed her youngest son nearly die from a pit bull attack some 25 years ago,” Garcia said. She said her mother lived in the area where the attack occurred for about nine months because it was where she found an apartment she could afford.
