Virginia: Dog abandoned in Va. Beach ditch; Animal Control asking for information

Update to story: Injustice in Virginia - Corey Ridley, 37, gets NO jail time after leaving his Beagle to die locked in a crate and thrown into a ditch

VIRGINIA --  Virginia Beach Animal Control investigators are seeking information about the owner of a dog left in a ditch on Saturday.

Around 7:30 a.m. on May 14, someone called Emergency Communications concerned about a dog in a crate on the side of the road in the 3600 block of Winston Avenue.

An Animal Control officer responded to the area and found the dog in a crate in the ditch. Authorities described the dog as an older, tri-colored female beagle.

“It is very hard for the officers seeing the animals suffering in this manner,” said Meghan Conti with Virginia Beach Animal Control. “To leave an animal at the side of the road to suffer an unknown fate is very frustrating.”

The beagle was left on Winston Avenue, a rural stretch of road surrounded on either side by trees.

“It surprises me that an animal can get to that condition and no action be taken,” Conti added.

The female dog was emaciated and had a giant tumor growing from her side.

“A tumor of that size and that condition doesn’t occur over night,” Conti said. “It takes sometime for it to get that large.”

Vets removed the tumor Wednesday afternoon and Conti says the surgery went well. The dog will be nursed back to health and hopefully adopted.

“The animals that come in our shelter can’t speak for themselves, they can’t tell you who did it, and they can’t tell you how long they’ve been suffering in this condition,” Conti added.

10 On Your Side talked with residents who live along Winston Avenue. They tell us they’ve seen dogs and cats dumped along the side of the road before, but no one saw what happened this time.

This incident remains under investigation.

Investigators are now asking for the public’s help for any information about the dog or the dog’s owner. Anyone with information is encouraged to call Virginia Beach Crime Solvers at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP (1-888-562-5887).
