CALIFORNIA -- A Grass Valley woman has been charged with multiple felony counts of animal cruelty after she reportedly set her two pit bulls on a flock of chickens and a baby goat.
“We had received several calls about the woman,” said Nevada County Sheriff’s Sgt. Sam Brown.
The initial calls came at about 12:43 p.m. Wednesday, regarding a woman who appeared to be incapacitated and was in the middle of the roadway in the Squirrel Creek Road area, Brown said.
Deputies also were called out for a report of a woman with two dogs who had been following a juvenile.
The girl reportedly told deputies that she was scared and locked herself in her residence, then could hear the woman trying to open the door.
She then heard a “commotion” from the back, where there was a chicken coop, and ran outside, Brown said.
The girl reportedly saw the woman open the large enclosure and direct her two dogs inside. The dogs killed several chickens and severely maimed several others, Brown said, adding they might need to be euthanized.
The pit bulls also killed a young goat, which Brown said was a family pet and had been living in the house before being moved to the chicken coop as a safety measure.
Deputies initially arrested the woman, Jolene Mulligan, on suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance. After investigating the livestock incident, they also booked Mulligan, 36, on five counts of felony animal cruelty, Brown said.
The dogs were seized by Animal Control and were in custody at the animal shelter.
