OREGON -- Medford Police have arrested a man who is accused of encouraging his pit bulls to attack another dog.
According to officers, a woman was walking her dog on a leash as she entered the driveway of South Medford High School. Charles Everett Nathan, 36, who was walking three brown and white pit bull type dogs on a leash was leaving the same driveway. One of the pit bulls broke loose and started attacking the woman’s Jack Russell.
Officers said Nathan came over to the woman with his other two pit bulls and they joined in the attack. Nathan wouldn’t stop his dogs from mauling the Jack Russell, reportedly telling the owner that the dogs are “pack animals” and to leave them be.
Medford Police said after the Jack Russell had been mauled nearly to death and was lying motionless on the ground, Nathan took his dogs and left.
The woman followed Nathan, but police said he threatened her, saying he would let his dogs attack her if she didn’t stop following him.
The woman rushed her dog to a veterinarian, but the Jack Russell terrier had to be euthanized due to the severity of its injuries from the pit bulls (basically they tore the little guy apart).
Police tracked down Nathan to an address on the 1700 block of Orchard Home Drive. When Nathan was arrested, officers said they found him to be in the possession of methamphetamine and heroin.
He was taken to the Jackson County Jail on charges of animal abuse, menancing, and drug possession. His bail was set at $32,000.
