South Carolina: Tyrik Gaffney, 17, wrapped a wire around his ex-girlfriend's cat's neck and hung it to death

SOUTH CAROLINA -- An Orangeburg man is in jail after police say he hanged his ex-girlfriend's pet cat earlier this month.

An incident report states that a woman called law enforcement at 10 p.m. on June 12 to report that she and her daughter discovered the cat dangling from the clothesline in the backyard.

Tyrik Jacquez Gaffney, 17, was arrested over the weekend after authorities say he tied a wire around the kitten's neck and hanged the cat from a clothes line.
Gaffney has a $4,000 bond.

The woman told officers that she’d given Gaffney a place to stay, but that she’d recently put him out of her house because he was causing confusion in her household and fighting her daughter.

The woman told officers she believed Gaffney killed her daughter’s cat because she kicked him out of the house.

The incident report says Gaffney called his ex-girlfriend before she discovered the cat.

"The victim stated that Tyrik said, 'I left a present for you in the backyard," the report said. "Your family is in danger, and I will see you tomorrow!"

If convicted, he will face 180 days to five years in prison and a fine of $5,000.
