WASHINGTON -- Yakima police and animal control officers responded to a call about an animal in a tree that was “terrorizing” two residents in northeast Yakima this morning.

A hysterical woman and man called police dispatchers saying there was a “pig with spikes in a tree” shooting spikes at them around 9:10 a.m., said Officer Kim Hipner.

Hipner and city animal control officer Ben Zigan arrived to find a porcupine on a branch about 15 feet up a tree near the corner of East Lincoln Avenue and North Ninth Street.

The porcupine, which are incapable of shooting their quills didn’t appear to be hurting anyone, said Zigan, noting the animal could defend itself by swinging its tail.

Officers decided it was best to leave the porcupine in the tree. But Zigan said he would check in on it throughout the day and move it to a safer location when it returned to the ground.
