California: Sheena Martin, 31, arrested after shooting Border Collie to death

CALIFORNIA -- A woman was arrested Wednesday after shooting a dog because it “needed to go,” the Corcoran Police Department said.

Around 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a home in the 2000 block of Vandortsen Avenue after a man reported a family member had shot and killed his dog.

Police said the owner had returned home that evening and found the 8-year-old border collie dead inside a garbage can.

The owner told police that Sheena Martin, 31, who also lives in the home, had recently begun complaining about the dog bothering her. Martin reportedly told the owner she shot the dog with a .22-caliber rifle.

Officers found evidence of the shooting in the backyard of the home.

Martin was arrested and booked into the Kings County Jail on suspicion of animal cruelty and illegally discharging a firearm. Her bail is set at $50,000.
