New Jersey: Rabid raccoon attacked child in Mansfield, police say

NEW JERSEY -- A rabid raccoon bit a toddler on the thigh child at a home on Axe Factory Road on Wednesday afternoon, police said Friday.

The raccoon attack was unprovoked, police Chief Ronald Mulhall said. He said it was his understanding that the child's father fended off the animal, and that the incident was reported that evening.

An animal control officer responded, and the animal tested positive for rabies. The child, who is under age 2, is undergoing treatment and is doing well, Mulhall said.

The police are wary of exposures to rabid animals at Crystal Lake Park, a county park bordering Axe Factory Road. The department hadn't received any other reports of encounters, the chief said.

While unprovoked attacks are rare, authorities urge anyone who has encountered a potentially rabid animal to call the local police.
