On April 5th, Bill Robbins had parked his car outside his store off Southeast 82nd Avenue last Thursday and locked it, but kept it running to keep his dog Kona cool while he briefly stepped inside the store.
RIP Kona |
Police say 34-year-old Francisco Vincent Gonzalez stole the car belonging to Bill Robbins while the victim's dog was inside.
Robbins had set up a $5,000 reward for information leading to Kona's return.
The car was found five days later with Kona, the Great Dane and black Lab mix, dead inside.
Gonzalez was arrested at a Portland motel and indicted by a grand jury on several charges, including animal neglect, theft and possession of methamphetamine.
"To find out he (Kona) was only a mile away -- to feel like I wasn't there for him. But they caught the guy, and this guy needs to be sentenced to the full strength of the law," Robbins told KATU.
Robbins buried Kona on his property in southern Oregon Tuesday in a spot with a view of the Siskiyou Mountains.
After initially pleading not guilty, a Multnomah County grand jury indicted Gonzalez on charges of animal abuse, animal neglect, animal abandonment, theft, unauthorized use of motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful possession of meth and identity theft.
Robbins says the new charges provide some semblance of hope when he is struggling to heal from the loss of Kona. He is optimistic the continued attention surrounding Kona's case could lead to harsher consequences for those guilty of animal abuse.
"It makes me sick, it really does, that he's going to get more [jail, probation] time for my car and my money -- stuff that I didn't care about. I offered him [the reward] if he just brought my dog back," Robbins said.
Gonzalez pleaded guilty to all the charges Monday.
WHAT ABOUT HIS WIFE, WHO WAS ALSO CHARGED?
Note: No word yet on his skank wife, Linda Kathy Gutierrez, and her case outcome.
