California: Abused pit bull puppy recovering after being badly burned

CALIFORNIA -- A witness saw flames in an orchard in California and was horrified to find a mutilated puppy at the site.

A 3 or 4-month-old pit bull puppy was found last Thursday with second and third degree burns over a large portion of her body. The puppy, named Harvey, is now under the care of the Northwest SPCA in Oroville, CA.

“We are all completely distraught over this situation,” a worker at the SPCA said.

Some of the dog’s baby teeth were also missing when she was found, and the SPCA thinks she may have been kicked before she was burned. Her eye socket was swollen, but workers believe the puppy’s eye is still intact.

Most of the damage seems to be confined to the right side of Harvey’s body, and workers at the SPCA are glad her health is improving.

“She's getting stronger every day, and if we see improvement every day, it's a good sign,” a worker said.

However, the SPCA warned in a Facebook video that the puppy’s recovery period will be long, and she will need several surgeries.
